During the period from 1982 to 1986, Rev. Ganshin regularly attended the Buddhist English Academy, where he met Professor Ichishima of Taisho University. In 1986, he received ordination from Reverend Ichishima at his temple in Chiba-ken. Having returned to the UK in 1986, he started his service to propagate Buddhism at his private residence, and he enshrined an image of Yakushi Nyorai that he had obtained 40 years before. Presently he gives a weekly meditation class and a reading of the Lotus Sutra for his ten regular students. In 1988, Reverend Ganshin worked as an Occupational Therapy Assistant with mentally ill patients for three years. He did this in order to gain more insight into human suffering as a Buddhist priest. He also studied Osteopathy and earned a license as a practitioner. In 1992, he was appointed Consultant to Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai with the responsibility of disseminating copies of their book "The Teaching of Buddha" in the hotels, schools, hospitals and various other institutions throughout the country. In addition, the Department of Education appointed Reverend Ganshin as a Buddhist Advisor for the religious education of the UK's School system. He is sometimes asked to give lectures on Buddhism at local schools. Recently, he has made efforts to promote inter-faith dialogue. One of the actions that he took was visiting Northern Ireland to share Buddhist teachings in order to help establish peace between the Catholics and Protestants. He then sent a detailed report to the Prime Minister of the UK and urged him to intensify dialogue with the conflicting parties. In this way, Rev. Ganshin is fulfilling his commitment to spread the Dharma by all possible means. |
